Ninh Binh: A Peaceful Vietnam Retreat

After the stunning beauty of Halong Bay, We found ourselves riding our trusty motorcycle toward Ninh Binh. This leg of the journey was a sharp contrast to the winding roads of Ha Giang. Instead of tranquil mountain passes, we navigated bustling towns and industrial cities. The shift in scenery brought its own challenges, but it also gave us a glimpse into Vietnam’s diverse landscapes.
A Warm Welcome at a Ninh Binh Homestay
Arriving in Ninh Binh, we checked into a homestay nestled in the heart of this charming province. Our host greeted us with warm smiles and a cup of refreshing tea. The homestay felt like a haven after hours on the road.
Ninh Binh caters to travelers with its variety of restaurants offering more than just Vietnamese staples. That night, we indulged in a cheesy pizza and a juicy burger—a welcome break from pho and banh mi. Later, we treated ourselves to an in-house massage that melted away the aches from hours of riding.

The next morning, we woke up to a delicious complimentary breakfast. A plate of banana crepes, a side of chicken Pho noodles, and a cup of strong Vietnamese coffee were just what we needed to fuel the day ahead.

Tam Coc: The Soul of Ninh Binh
Tam Coc, often called the “Ha Long Bay on Land,” was our first stop for the day. Located within the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name “Tam Coc” translates to “Three Caves,” referring to the trio of natural caves carved by the Ngo Dong River.
History and UNESCO Recognition
The limestone karsts that dominate Tam Coc’s landscape were formed over millions of years. They rise dramatically from the emerald-green rice fields, creating a scene that feels straight out of a fairy tale. Tam Coc gained UNESCO recognition for its unique geological features and cultural significance. This recognition has also brought significant changes to the local community.

The Impact of Tourism
Tourism has transformed Ninh Binh into a bustling hub, offering locals new opportunities and improving their livelihoods. Many families now operate homestays, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The region’s commitment to sustainability is evident in how well-maintained everything is. There’s no trash floating in the rivers, and the town’s streets are clean and organized.
Exploring Tam Coc by Boat
We bought our tickets at the Tam Coc pier and was assigned to a small rowboat. Each boat is operated by a local, many of whom use their feet to row—a fascinating skill passed down through generations.

As the boat glided along the Ngo Dong River, we were mesmerized by the scenery. Although the lotuses were not in bloom, the river teemed with life. Birds flitted between the reeds, frogs croaked from hidden perches and fish darted beneath the surface.
Passing Through the Caves
The highlight of the boat ride was passing through the three caves: Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba. These natural tunnels required us to duck our heads to avoid the low-hanging ceilings. Each cave had its own character, with stalactites dripping like frozen icicles and echoes that amplified the sounds of the river.
The Riverside Community
As we paddled further, we passed houses and homestays lining the riverbank. The residents waved cheerfully, their pride in their community evident in the pristine surroundings. Tourism has given them a platform to showcase their culture while maintaining their traditions.
Lunch and Exploring the Town
Back at the dock, we headed for lunch at the same restaurant we went to for dinner. The mango shake I ordered was so refreshing that I vowed to have one every chance I got.

After lunch, we strolled through the town. Souvenir shops displayed handcrafted items, from bamboo products to intricate embroidery. The energy of the place was vibrant yet relaxed—a perfect blend for travelers looking to unwind.
Relaxation and Reflection
The rest of the afternoon was spent at our homestay. We soaked in the pool, savoring the peaceful ambiance. After nearly two weeks on the road, we finally felt the weight of the journey. But there was still so much to see and we couldn’t wait for the adventures ahead.
