Halong Bay Day Tour: A Perfect Day in Vietnam

Halong Bay, with its iconic limestone islands and emerald waters, is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Vietnam. I had the chance to experience a full-day tour of Halong Bay, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From mystical caves to panoramic views, every moment was filled with wonder and excitement.
Arriving in Halong Bay
After a long journey from Cao Bang, we arrived in Halong Bay at night. Exhausted but excited, we checked into our accommodation and prepared for the day ahead. We booked our Halong Bay day tour through Klook, which offered a seamless and hassle-free experience.
The following morning, we woke up early, eager to start the adventure. For breakfast, we visited the famous Highlands Coffee. Their coffee was rich and aromatic, and the banh mi queโa slender baguette filled with savory goodnessโwas absolutely delicious. Fueled up and ready, we made my way to the Halong Bay pier.

Boarding the Boat
At the pier, we joined the rest of the tour group and met our friendly guide. After a brief introduction, the crew welcomed us aboard. They began with safety instructions, ensuring everyone felt secure for the dayโs adventure. The guide then shared a summary of the itinerary, building anticipation for what was to come.
The Legend of Halong Bay
As the boat set sail, our guide shared the captivating story of Halong Bayโs name. According to legend, when Vietnam was at war with invaders, the gods sent a family of dragons to help protect the land. These dragons spat out jade and jewels, which formed the bayโs limestone islands, creating a natural defense barrier. The name โHalongโ translates to โDescending Dragon,โ a nod to this mythical tale.

The guideโs storytelling added a magical touch to our journey. It made the scenery feel even more special, as if the islands themselves held a piece of history and mythology.
A Sumptuous Buffet Lunch
As we cruised through the bay, a delicious buffet lunch was served. The spread featured Vietnamese delicacies, and international dishes to cater to everyoneโs tastes. Enjoying the meal while surrounded by the bayโs breathtaking views was a moment of pure bliss.
Exploring Sung Sot Cave
Our first stop was Sung Sot Cave, also known as the Surprise Cave. Located on Bo Hon Island, this cave is one of Halong Bayโs most famous attractions.

The History and Beauty of Sung Sot Cave
Discovered by French explorers in the early 20th century, Sung Sot Cave quickly became a favorite destination. Its name reflects the awe visitors feel upon entering. The cave is divided into two chambers, with the first being smaller and the second opening into a vast, cathedral-like space.
Inside, we were greeted by dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by strategically placed lights. The formations took on shapes resembling animals, mythical creatures, and even human figures. Our guide pointed out the most famous ones, weaving stories and legends into the explanations.
The highlight was a stunning natural “skylight” at the top of the cave, where sunlight streamed in, creating a magical atmosphere.
Happy Hour on the Boat
After exploring the cave, we returned to the boat for a relaxing cruise. It was happy hour, and the boatโs bar offered a variety of drinks and cocktails. While sipping on a refreshing mojito, I watched the emerald waters sparkle under the sun.

Luon Cave: Kayaking and Bamboo Boats
Our next destination was Luon Cave, a serene spot surrounded by towering cliffs. Here, we had the option to either kayak or take a bamboo boat through the cave. We chose the bamboo boat, which was included in the tour package.
A Fun and Interactive Experience
The lady rowing our boat was friendly and even encouraged us to try rowing ourselves. It was a fun experience and gave us a deeper appreciation for her skill and strength. As we floated through the cave, we marveled at the calm waters and the lush vegetation clinging to the cliffs.

Ti Top Island: A 360-Degree View of Halong Bay
The final stop on our tour was Ti Top Island, named after the Russian astronaut Gherman Titov, who visited in 1962.
Climbing to the Top
The island offers two main activities: swimming and hiking. We chose to hike up the 1,000 steps to the hilltop viewpoint. Although the narrow stairs were crowded with tourists, everyone was polite and accommodating, making the climb enjoyable.
The view from the top was absolutely worth the effort. A 360-degree panorama of Halong Bay unfolded before me, with its countless limestone islands dotting the emerald waters. It was a sight Iโll never forget.

Sunset and Wine on the Return Cruise
As the day came to an end, we returned to the boat for a leisurely cruise back to the pier. The crew served wine and crackers, creating a perfect setting to watch the sunset. The golden hues of the sky reflected on the water, casting a warm glow over the bay.
A Memorable Experience
Halong Bay is not just about the stunning sceneryโitโs also about the people. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and engaging, and the crew went out of their way to ensure everyone had a great time. The fellow tourists were equally wonderful, sharing stories and laughter throughout the day.
