Exploring Morro Bay on a Scenic Highway 1 Road Trip

Nestled along California’s iconic Highway 1, Morro Bay is a charming coastal town that’s perfect for a quick stopover or a relaxing overnight stay. Known for its impressive Morro Rock, an active harbor, playful otters, and some truly excellent eateries, Morro Bay offers an inviting atmosphere for every traveler. Whether you’re looking to stretch your legs, grab a delicious bite, or immerse yourself in the scenic beauty, this stop won’t disappoint.

Here’s a look at how Morro Bay became a highlight of my Highway 1 road trip, from my cozy stay at the Bay View Inn to breakfasts by the water and an unforgettable sunset otter sighting.

Staying Close to the Water at Bay View Inn

On our way up Highway 1, I wanted an overnight stop close to the water, so I chose the Bay View Inn. It’s a small but comfortable place that lives up to its name, offering lovely views and easy access to the water and the bustling Embarcadero. Staying here placed me close to Morro Bay’s central attractions, especially the harbor area where you can feel the sea breeze and hear the gentle sound of waves breaking.

Being near the water added so much to my experience of the town. From morning coffee with a sea view to a quick evening stroll, it felt like I had the heart of Morro Bay right at my doorstep.

Meeting Morro Rock

Of course, you can’t visit Morro Bay without noticing the massive Morro Rock rising out of the water. Standing tall at 576 feet, this ancient volcanic mound is iconic and has served as a coastal landmark for centuries. Originally formed by volcanic activity over 20 million years ago, Morro Rock has a rich cultural history with ties to the local Chumash and Salinan tribes, who consider it a sacred site. Although climbing the rock is prohibited, the view alone is awe-inspiring.

I took a walk to the Morro Rock State Preserve, where visitors can get up close to this ancient giant. You can either take a short, scenic hike or simply find a spot to admire it from afar. It’s the perfect spot to take in the coastal landscape and feel a sense of calm.

Seals, Otters, and Wildlife Watching

Morro Bay is also a hotspot for wildlife. As I wandered around the docks, I was greeted by the familiar sounds of barking seals lounging nearby. They seem to love hanging around the docks, adding to the town’s lively, marine vibe. Watching them is always entertaining, especially if you’re traveling with kids or just a fan of curious sea creatures.

But the true highlight came during sunset. A family of playful otters swam near the dock, twisting and turning through the water. They floated on their backs, seemingly without a care in the world, and offered us an up-close look at their adorable antics. It was a magical experience that added a memorable touch to my stay.

Morning by the Bay at Frankie and Lola’s

One of the best things to do in Morro Bay is to enjoy breakfast by the water, and Frankie and Lola’s Front Street Cafe was the perfect spot. This cozy cafe offers a warm ambiance with indoor and outdoor seating, allowing you to soak in the bay view as you sip your coffee.

I ordered their classic breakfast special, which included fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and perfectly toasted bread. Their famous cinnamon roll was the real showstopper, with gooey icing that made it hard to share! As I ate, I watched the fishing boats heading out for the day, the water gleaming under the morning sun. It was one of those relaxing breakfasts that make you appreciate simple pleasures and great food.

Exploring the Rock and Nearby Trails

After breakfast, I decided to get closer to the Morro Rock. While hiking directly on the rock isn’t permitted, the nearby trails offer a beautiful walk with stunning views. It’s an easy walk, making it ideal for anyone who wants to stretch their legs after a long drive on Highway 1. If you’re with family, a picnic in this scenic area is a fantastic way to enjoy the scenery, as there are plenty of places to sit and unwind.

For a closer look at the rock’s natural beauty, head over to the Morro Rock State Preserve. The trails there allow you to explore the coastal surroundings, taking in the unique geology and plant life along the way. And if you’re a bird enthusiast, don’t forget your binoculars! The area is known for peregrine falcons that nest in the rock’s cliffs.
