A Brief History of Bai Dinh Pagoda

In 2003, construction began on the new Bai Dinh Pagoda, creating a massive complex covering 700 hectares. Today, it is the largest Buddhist temple in Vietnam. The new structures blend traditional Vietnamese architecture with modern craftsmanship. The complex includes grand halls, giant statues, and intricately designed pagodas.
Despite its recent expansion, Bai Dinh retains its spiritual essence. Pilgrims and tourists alike come to pray, admire the beauty, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
Getting to Bai Dinh and Buying Tickets
Visiting Bai Dinh is easy. I arrived by motorcycle and parked near the entrance. Cars and motorcycles are not allowed inside the complex, but electric buggies provide transport. You can walk, but the area is massive, and using a buggy saves time and energy.
I bought my ticket at the booth near the parking lot. The ticket included the buggy ride and a relaxing foot wash. At first, I didn’t think much of the foot wash, but it turned out to be a highlight of my visit!
After securing my ticket, I hopped onto the electric buggy, ready to explore. The ride was smooth, and the views along the way were stunning. The complex’s grand structures slowly came into view, and excitement filled the air.
Exploring Bai Dinh: The Buggy Stops
The buggy made several stops, allowing visitors to explore different parts of the complex. Each stop revealed something unique and impressive.
First Stop: The Giant Arhat Corridor
The first stop was the Arhat Corridor, home to over 500 stone statues of enlightened monks. Each statue had a different facial expression and posture, making them fascinating to observe. Walking through the long corridor felt like stepping into a sacred world.
Second Stop: The Bell Tower
Next, we reached the grand bell tower, a striking structure with intricate carvings. Inside, a massive bronze bell stood tall, weighing 36 tons. The deep, resonant sound of the bell echoed through the complex, creating a calming atmosphere.
Third Stop: The Main Pagoda
The main Bai Dinh Pagoda was the highlight of the tour. Its golden Buddha statues, detailed woodwork, and towering columns showcased incredible craftsmanship. Devotees lit incense and prayed, adding to the temple’s spiritual ambiance.
Fourth Stop: The Maitreya Buddha Statue
We then arrived at the Maitreya Buddha statue, the largest in Vietnam. This massive bronze statue represents happiness and prosperity. The sheer size of the statue left me in awe.
The Stunning 360-Degree View from Bai Dinh Pagoda
After exploring the temples, I climbed to the top of the Bai Dinh Stupa. The climb was worth every step! From the top, I could see the breathtaking Ninh Binh countryside. Rolling hills, lush rice fields, and winding rivers stretched as far as the eye could see.
The 360-degree view was one of the most memorable parts of my visit. The peaceful surroundings and fresh air made it a perfect spot to pause and appreciate the beauty of Vietnam.
Relaxing Foot Wash: A Perfect Ending
Before leaving, I took advantage of the foot wash included in my ticket. After walking for hours, it was a much-needed treat! The warm water and soothing massage left me refreshed and ready for the rest of my Ninh Binh adventures.

- Use the Buggy Service – It saves time and energy, making the visit more enjoyable.
